Reenactment of Battle of Trevilian Station We  hope you enjoy a few images from the reenactment of the Battle of Trevilian Station held at Bracketts Farm in Green Springs June 12-13th.  Nothing is quite like  being there, but pictures may help give a sense of the event.  Our special thanks to all those who worked so hard to bring history to [...]
  • Mules at Thompson’s Crossroads 1863 (2010/2/8)
Mules at Thompson’s Crossroads 1863 We’ve been working on a new Civil War tour brochure for Louisa County of late, trying to make those tough determinations of what might hold the most interest, be of greatest importance, etc.  Last week I was in the Civil War room at the Sargeant Museum with two other women on the tour committee.  We [...]
  • A Genealogist’s Goldmine (2010/2/8)
A Genealogist’s Goldmine Our resident genealogical sage, Janice Abercrombie, recently alerted me to the existence of the ledger books from the store of Thomas Partridge in Hanover County. The store ledger from 1734-1756 was transcribed and published in 1985 and 86 in the Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly. You'll find in the ledger the name of almost everyone in Louisa County between 1730-1750s...
  • A Ride Through Holly Grove (2009/8/27)
A Ride Through Holly Grove I forgot the thrill of biking through the countryside until yesterday when I drove through eastern Louisa County mapping out a biking route there. As you might suspect, I’ve spent this morning dusting off my bicycle and resolving to get my legs in shape for a long ride by fall. Here are some pics from [...]
  • The Old Mountain Road (2009/7/28)
The Old Mountain Road To understand the sheer delight that will undoubtably  ooze through this post, it helps to know my license tag is “Bak Rdz”. Back Roads, that is. The Old Mountain Road (Rt. 640) and the inviting little spurs that take you off down some of the few remaining gravel roads in central Virginia are a treat [...]

  • NEW HAMPSHIRE May Be the FIRST STATE to BAN ICLEI! the RNC Resolution Has Also Spurred OTHER ACTION! (2012/1/27)
I found this fabulous bill based on this site so I confirmed it at the New Hampshire legislative (General Court is the name for the NH legislature) website and here’s the text of the bill that BANS ICLEI in the Granite State – House Bill 1634: STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twelve AN ACT prohibiting the state, counties, towns, and cities from implementing programs of, expending money for, receiving funding from, or contracting with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives. Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened: 1 New Section; Towns and Cities; Prohibition Added. • NOT YET CONFIRMED: COUNTY in NC PASSES Anti-AGENDA 21 RESOLUTION Based on the RNC Resolution! (2012/1/27)
I received the news through my blog background that Gaston County NC was about to have a resolution debated by its county commissioners to condemn Agenda 21. The Gaston County Board of Commissioners will consider a resolution condemning Agenda 21 during its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Gaston County Courthouse, 325 N. Marietta St., Gastonia. There was some good quotes from these patriotic commissioners in this newspaper: But Loftis believes the county’s resolution “to heighten awareness of Agenda 21’s impact on communities in the United States” is necessary to shed light on a nefarious United Nations initiative.  *  *  *  “The point is, this is something people do need to know about because it’s happening in other parts of the country,” said Commissioner Tra...
  • Schumer Says “We Are in Great Shape” as GDP Growth Slows (2012/1/27)
At a press conference on Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), a key member of Senate Democrats’ leadership, took to the podium to criticize something Gov. Mitch Daniels (R-IN) said in his Republican Address the night before. Gov. Daniels said , “On these evenings, Presidents naturally seek to find the sunny side of our national condition.  But when President Obama claims that the state of our union is anything but grave, he must know in his heart that this is not true.” In response, Schumer said , “The Republican speaker last night, Mitch Daniels, talked about Americans must talk about the state of the union as grave. So, we think we are in great shape. We are in good shape.” Senate Democrats think “we are in great shape”? Currently, over 13 million Americans are unemploye...
  • ROANOKE COUNTY Votes for ICLEI – SOME OBSERVATIONS (2012/1/27)
I read with dismay this article on Roanoke County voting to remain in the unconstitutional federation known as ICLEI.  Here’s the justification for this vote: Supervisor Charlotte Moore, who has always supported the membership, voted for it. So did Republicans Mike Altizer and Richard Flora, who opposed a formal resolution from their own party calling for the county to cut ties with ICLEI. “They’ve never come out so strongly on something so … not fact oriented,” Flora said of the Republican Party’s position. He called the ICLEI opposition a movement similar to McCarthyism of the mid-20th century. “Tonight I’m part of a fringe element. I’m so proud of myself,” Supervisor Ed Elswick, an independent, said of his vote against ICLEI ...
  • APPELLATE DEFENDER NEEDS Co-Sponsor in the HOUSE! (2012/1/26)
We have been talking about the need for an Appellate Defender in Virginia and I am told by deep background that we could sure use a co-sponsor in the House of Delegates.  I want to encourage all my readers to ask their House of Delegates member to co-sponsor the Petersen Appellate Defender budget amendment in the House. Thanks for all you do! • Mechanicsville Elementry School Pushes Gay and Lesbian Agenda on Pre-Teen Kids in Hanover (2012/1/25)
WARNING – Graphic Content! Sexually Explicit Information contained in this post! I am sorry I feel the need to be blunt and completely honest here, but this is so shocking that I feel it is necessary. My apologies to anyone that is offended, but this is done in the interest of protecting our kids from the Liberal agenda being thrust upon them in Hanover County. This is hard to believe. Especially in Hanover. In other school systems where the liberals have taken over it would not come as a surprise. But Hanover is different. Or it used to be. A left wing group known as the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) has an agenda. Don’t be fooled by the use of the word “straight” in their name. This is a group who has been in the news recently for their disg...
  • NOW I CAN TALK ABOUT IT! SUPPORT SEN. CHAP PETERSEN’s Budget Amendment Establishing an APPELLATE DEFENDER’S OFFICE! (2012/1/25)
I hinted that there was news on the Appellate Defender’s Office front.  Now I can openly discuss it! Senator Chap Petersen of Fairfax has introduced a budget amendment ( here it is!) to reestablish an Appellate Defender’s Office in this Commonwealth.  It’s a tiny office at first, not even one quarter the size of the criminal appellate division of the Attorney General’s office, but it is a necessary start. The Constitution of the United States protects an indigent’s right to an attorney in both the trial courts and in the first appellate court in any state like Virginia that has two or more appellate courts.  But Virginia goes one step further – protecting by statute the right to appeal to the Supreme Court of Virginia.  Hence, indigents have the opp...
  • Obama Hawaii Vacation Bill to Taxpayers: $4 Million. Romney Taxes Paid: $3 Million (2012/1/24)
Mitt Romney should be ashamed of himself! With only $3 Million going to the Federal Government, How does he expect Mooch-chelle and Barack Obama to be able to afford their lavish Hawaii vacations? According to the Huffington Post , the Obamas were forced to spend $4 Million in taxpayer’s dollars to vacation in the style to which they have become accustomed. His and her jumbo jets, lavish dinners and First Class accommodations all the way. It seems that Mitt should at least be willing to shell out another million or so to allow the first couple to enjoy themselves. 90 rounds of golf is not easy. It takes long walks on deserted beaches and fancy Luaus, expensive wines and imported delicacies to even begin to soften the calluses a 9 iron can cause. In fact, I think it is fair to say th...
  • Karen Kwiatkowski: ‘No Whining, Mr. Goodlatte!’ (2012/1/24)
This is an article by Karen Kwiatkowski who is running against Republican Congressman Bob Goodlatte in VA-6 primary. Virginia Right! has endorsed Karen in her bid to retire 10 term Congressman Goodlatte. His support and push for internet censorship and giving the Hollywood Elite complete power over the internet after taking money from the Hollywood Lobby is the main reason that this endorsement was an easy decision. Goodlatte seems to overlook the destructive nature and hatred that the Hollywood elite has for the Republican Party. And aligning himself with Democrat Chriss Dodd on this subject is simply disgraceful. Please consider supporting Karen Kwiatkowski in her bid to send a left wing Republican home. We need strong Conservatives in Washington! No Whining, Mr. Goodlatte! Good people ...

  • LEAVE HUNGARY ALONE! the Obama Administration Is Taking Sides With the EU to FORCE HUNGARY to Change Its Laws! (2012/1/24)
How outraged can I be?  The Hungary situation is outrageous.  The EU is trying to use legal and economic power to force Hungary to change internal laws that are none of the EU’s business. Here’s the legal threats: Unimpressed by Mr. Orban’s facile promises, the majority parties in the European Parliament now want governmental leaders to consider invoking a clause of the E.U. treaty that would strip Hungary of some voting rights if Mr. Orban continued to flout European law. Europe’s powers to nudge Hungary back from authoritarianism are limited. But to its credit, it has begun wielding them. *  *  * If Hungary fails to satisfy the commission on those issues, the matter could go to the European Court of Justice, which has the authority to fine Hungary. Beyond that, under...
  • IS the OBAMA ADMINISTRATION Supporting ARGENTINA in the FALKLAND ISLANDS Dispute? (2012/1/22)
I am greatly concerned about any intervention in a foreign dispute by the Obama Administration.  But the Falkland dispute is special because the answers seem so clear for me and I was confident that we would stand with the Falkland islanders’ wish to remain British would be honored by the US.  Now I read this in a recent Guardian article : A US State Dpartment spokesman said on Friday: “We recognise de facto United Kingdom administration of the islands but take no position regarding sovereignty.” We take no position?  NO POSITION?  The islanders wishes have no bearing?  This is not the only time the Obama Administration took a pretend neutral position.  Consider this resolution of the Organization of American States: It has not yet been possible to resume the negot...
  • Editorials Castigate Obama”s Keystone Rejection as “the Most Craven Sort of Election-Year Politics” (2012/1/20)
Trying to find any sense in President Obama’s stunning rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline and the 20,000 jobs it would have created, columnist Robert Samuelson writes today, “It isn’t often that a president makes a decision that has no redeeming virtues and — beyond the symbolism — won’t even advance the goals of the groups that demanded it. All it tells us is that Obama is so obsessed with his re-election that, through some sort of political calculus, he believes that placating his environmental supporters will improve his chances.” Indeed, many other observers have criticized President Obama for his placement of electoral politics of American jobs and energy security with this decision. The Houston Chronicle editorialized yesterday, “President Barack Obama has...
  • Will Newt Survive His Ex-Wives With Knives? (2012/1/20)
What can I do to get on the right track I wish they’d take some of these knives off my back (They smile in your face) All the time they want to take your place The back stabbers (back stabbers) Low down… dirty… (What they do!) (They smile in your face) The O’Jays would appreciate the jam Newt Gingrich has found himself in. Backstabbers! But perhaps none can stab harder or deeper than a vindictive and bitter ex. I’m not trying to be sexist here, and I know a lot of men who are real jerks to their ex-wives and do incredibly horrific things, but I think there are some women among us that are so skillful and adept at vindictiveness that their accuracy and timing of the barbs and bombs would make the best missile guidance system blush with shame. Most men will onl...

  • [2008/10/20] KAINE ANNOUNCES FEDERAL DISASTER DESIGNATIONS FOR ELEVEN VIRGINIA COUNTIES
RICHMOND—Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced today that the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture has designated Amelia, Amherst, Bedford, Campbell, Dinwiddie, Halifax, Louisa, Nelson, Nottoway, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward counties primary natural disaster areas because of reductions in farm production caused by drought and excessive heat that occurred this calendar year.

These disaster designations make farmers eligible for low-interest loans and any supplemental relief that might be provided by Congress in the future.

“The low-interest loans farmers in these counties are now eligible to apply for could provide much needed assistance,” Governor Kaine said. “We anticipate that the USDA will soon respond to the many additional requests for...
